After observing a lack of engagement by big names on Twitter, Elon Musk started to question the future of the social media platform. Musk, who purchased a 9.2% stake in Twitter Inc., was invited to join the company’s board of directors.
Tesla’s CEO retweeted rankings that showed the top accounts by followers. According to Musk, the majority of the top accounts on Twitter rarely utilize the platform. He also wondered whether it is a sign that the platform is “dying.”
The list of the top follower accounts includes pop stars like Tylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. It also contains football player Cristiano Ronaldo and the top former President Obama with 131.4M followers. Even Elon Musk is on the list. He came in eighth place with 81M followers.

“Most of these ‘top’ accounts tweet rarely and post very little content,” Musk said. “Is Twitter dying?” He added, “For example, @taylorswift13 hasn’t posted anything in 3 months, and @justinbieber only posted once this entire year.”
Since the news of Musk’s controlling 73.5 million shares of Twitter, which makes him the largest shareholder, the shares of the company jumped more than 25% in price.
A week after Musk’s purchase, SpaceX’s founder criticized the company for its policy toward free speech.
The platform once locked the conservative satire site The Babylon Bee out of its account. The reason was a joke of awarding Dr. Rachel Levine, a Biden administration official a “Man of the Year” award. Since Levine is a transgender woman.
